Staying on top of recruiting insights is a crucial way to maintain an edge in today’s business climates. US Business Talent

Top applicants in the US are driven by specific factors that make employment opportunities more appealing to them. These include:

  • Career goal messages around work/life balance
  • Job Security and Stability
  • Ability to become a leader or manager of people with an international career possibility

 

US talent score their academic performance highly, with both sexes rating themselves as a 10/10. Men place 15% more value on performance recognition and 8% more on an employer’s recruiting only the best talent – so highlighting these aspects is likely to have greater appeal. Women emphasize an inclusive, respectful environment to a much greater extent. For high academic achievers, it’s also good to highlight the aspect of offering a challenging career path.

Other factors of high importance to the Top US Talent are supportive leaders and training and development. These candidates want to know that they are entering into an environment where they can learn and grow. Students graduating in 2017 also reported that consulting, financial services and media were their preferred industries. Those who graduate in 2021 are much more focused on innovation, high future earnings, and challenge. More specialized industries appeal to them, such as engineering, manufacturing, aerospace/defense and software.

35% of US students want to work for an international company/organization after graduation and 29% want to work for a privately-owned national company/organization.

Better Engaging US Talent Applicants

The top 10 most effective communication channels for interacting with and gaining the interest of US applicants are:

  • Job Boards
  • Career and Job-Related Apps
  • Employer Presentations on Campus
  • Employer Office/Site Visits
  • Employer Advertisements on TV
  • University Press & Student Organization Publications

Creating a strong appeal around work/life balance, job security and stability, growth and the ability to become a leader/manager of people are all compelling aspects for new grads in the US.

UK Business Talent

Business students applying for jobs in the UK list Banks as the most preferred industry, just above Management and Strategy Consulting. It should be noted that is particularly younger students, who are part of Generation Z that are the ones driving this trend. These students are very attracted to rapid careers and high compensations, as well as becoming leaders, which explains why they are driven by the idea of joining the banking industry.

Engineering/IT students of both genders want most to work in Software and Computer Services. In terms of graduate programs, UK students, on the whole, are very interested in pursuing one. Business students are most interested in business integration, development, and mentorship while Engineering/IT students value development, mentorship, and variety of rotations.

After graduation, UK students are most interested in working for an international company/organization or continue with their studies. Male students prefer macro employers (1000+ employees) while female students prefer medium-sized employers (100-499 employees).

After graduation in the UK, a whopping 51% of graduates want to work for an international company/organization, while 17% want to work for a privately-owned national company/organization.

There is definitely increased competition in both the US and UK markets when it comes to attracting top talent early and snap up candidates before they have finished their degree or entered their final year.
